Nov 27, 2014 - Emo Site Update [read more]
OMG I haven't updated the news for about 9months. I have been busy moving house as well as reading lots of programming books and of course working on this site, so I certainly haven't forgotten about it!
The site is still going strong and continuing to grow as shown by the statistics below.
A few things that have gone on since the last update back in February 2014 (without getting too technical):
  • Show IP address on profiles for admins
  • Strengthened server to further help combat DoS attacks that can bring the site down temporarily
  • Edit profile - disabled users adding Meta refreshes!
  • Added restriction on post topic to avoid duplicate topics (same title, content & author)
  • Altered all calls to getimagesize to use server path rather than URL as faster
  • Pre-ordered some new domains for the site
  • Compressed/minified more .js and .css files and added to browser caching to help make the site more efficient
  • Added private chat mod room as per: http://www.phpfreechat.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4648
  • Updated jQuery library
  • Profile vids edited to work with YouTube links with youtu.be sort of urls
  • Totally reworked login script to be more secure and up to date
  • Trying out various Google adSense experiments
  • Profile ratings - JavaScript error: Illegal return statement in JavaScript - fixed by moving ratings to functions
  • *Important* Complete new user directory structure split into subfolders (e.g. users/a/anne, users/b/bob, etc) as reached subdirectory file system limits. Learnt my lesson there but then again I didn't expect the site to get this big!
  • Numerous edits in htaccess for rewrites and redirects to work with the new structure without affecting usability or existing urls
  • Registration - username length now needs to be >2
  • Removed lots of old inactive profiles
  • New site models - posted to our Twitter as per forum topics
  • Subscribe to forum topic updates new function - notifications on nav bar count and on account homepage
  • 'Deadly serious' new tech bug found - Shellshock - patched server
  • Changed JS functions: escape to encodeURIComponent as escape deprecated
  • Stop all the annoying new Kik forum topics - code put in place to restrict users to post in www.soemo.co.uk/forums/topic.php?id=2807600 instead!

I will continue making further improvements/tweaks on the current site and reading more books, but I do know the new responsive site needs to get sorted still!

Feb 11, 2014 - Emo Site Update [read more]
I can't believe it's already been over 2 months since the last site update! A fair amount has gone on since then and lots more changes/improvements are to come!

Recent work has included:
  • All areas of the site now use the improved jQuery pagination to improve the user experience.
  • Adding and deleting Profile Comments has been improved with the use of jQuery to make the process more efficient. Private messaging, forums, etc will also be improved in the next few weeks.
  • Altered static image on homepage for featured member to be a slideshow with a random selection of featured user images.
  • Google Webmaster Tools & Adsense - errors on this are checked on a regular basis. Recent fixes include failed crawl requests, caused by a misconfigured robots.txt file that's blocking certain pages of your site from the AdSense crawler.
  • SoEmo Twitter - further profile improvements to hopefully attract more people.
  • Started applying some iPhone Media queries to make the site more mobile friendly/responsive. There is loads to do in this area when time allows!!
  • Extended cleanup cron job to remove any blank forum posts.
  • Many PHP/MySQL security tweaks.

Dec 04, 2013 - Emo Site Update [read more]
As if it's December already and soon be Christmas... Anyway onto another brief site update (a bit more techy than usual, but not as much as our own change log!)..

Recent work has included:
  • Many areas of the site are starting to use more jQuery to improve the user experience. For example the pagination on the site models. This paging functionality will be implemented throughout the site over the next few weeks. Any such changes will still be usable with JavaScript disabled, be search engine friendly and won't affect the browser back button and bookmark functionality. A lot of sites don't appear to consider these important considerations and end up making the user experience worse rather than better! Once all the paging has been updated other functions such as add/edit/delete comments, forum posts, etc will be improved with the use of jQuery.
  • Made "both" the default option on the gender selection in Browse Members - a tiny change that should aid searches.
  • Sorted an issue with rating pictures that would sometimes hang. Simply had to add "return false;" on all "window.location.href" JavaScript calls. Where possible (before any output has been sent) using the PHP header function instead as more reliable.
  • Edited the user report system to make extra info required unless the reason is fakes. The report system is a great new (and popular) feature to help the site run smoothly, but this tweak was needed to help combat unnecessary or ambiguous reports.
  • Updated the PHP Mcrypt extension to sort at issue with phpMyAdmin
  • There are quite a few topics relating to non "emo" music such as heavy metal, nu-metal, etc in the Emo Music forum section so "(& other music)" has been added to the name. Feel free to discuss all types of music. Variety is the spice of life and all that :)
We are looking for all the help we can get with the site, especially as I personally need to concentrate more on coding improvements than the daily admin. Please check out the following forum topic: Help out on soEmo.co.uk

Yes yet another site news update!!

Recent work has included speeding the site up by leveraging browser caching (www.feedthebot.com/pagespeed/leverage-browser-caching.html) and the new responsive design. There is loads to do on the new design/layout but at least something is slowly coming together now and it's looking good :)

Oh and we now have over 1000 beautiful emo scene girl and guy site models. Check out the following forum topic: www.soemo.co.uk/forums/topic.php?id=2808491

Aug 30, 2013 - Emo Site Update [read more]
Yet another month has flown by...

Recent changes have mainly just been security tweaks and improvements in addition to further research/planning for the new responsive site design. The whole site will look completely different and work well on mobile devices. Once I have a basic template design sorted I will post it for your feedback.

Oh and I'd like to thank TashaCatastrophe and Kate for helping out with the reported users administration :)

Jul 23, 2013 - soEmo.co.uk - 6 Years Old! [read more]
Bit late posting this and a lot of you won't believe it but soEmo.co.uk was 6 years old on July 18th! I still remember back in 2007 when it was a one page site describing what emo is and now look at it :)
I do hope it continues to grow and I have no plans to close the popular emo scene site! Chat about our 6 year anniversary in the following forum topic: www.soemo.co.uk/forums/topic.php?id=2808120

Anyway recent changes include:
  • Clear Chat Rules added under the chat window
  • Updated the Twitter integration on the forum to use the new Twitter API v1.1
  • Numeous security tweaks

The new reporting system is proving to be very useful in logging and combating users breaking the rules on the site, but we now desperately need more chat mods.
Please see the following forum topic: www.soemo.co.uk/forums/topic.php?id=2807849

Jun 21, 2013 - Emo Site Update [read more]
Almost July OMG this year is passing by too quick for my liking! Anyway...

Recent changes include:
  • New Roleplay Chatroom
  • Reporting system to report users breaking the Terms of Use including a restricted admin area to investigate and action the reports (only accessible by xXeMoRaCeRXx and TashaCatastrophe but more users may be given access). Hopefully this will help keep www.soEmo.co.uk a happy and safe emo community.

The new drop down user account menu has gone down pretty well from feedback I have received, but if you have any issues please email info@soemo.co.uk
Also it was worthwhile adding the ability to disable friend journal update notifications as almost 300 of you have done this now!
I really need to find time to build the new responsive design/layout I keep mentioning!! If only there were more hours in the day..

Feb 27, 2013 - Emo Site Update [read more]
Ok another terribly exciting news update haha :D

Firstly it's great to see the re-worked notification system seems to have gone down well over the last couple of months with no issues.
A new responsive design is in the planning stages for the whole site. It will be a big job, but needs to be done as Google Analytics reports mobile (including tablet) use is now up to 32% and will most likely continue to increase.
Plus even though the design of the site doesn't look too dated it's not had a major update for a few years now.

Wow how time flies... haven't done an update for almost 2 months!
Some of the recent changes/improvements include:
  • Your total number of new notifications in the top user nav bar now automatically refreshes throughout the site even on the chat now so you do not have to manually refresh the whole page!
  • Additionally your Account Homepage has been totally re-worked and new notifications (comments, messages, journal entries, etc) will automatically appear without refreshing the page - like Facebook, Twitter, etc...
  • Upgraded PHPFreeChat from v1.3 to v1.5
  • Added popup Cookie notification to comply with EU Cookie Law using and updated Privacy Policy in regard to cookies

Now the notification system has all been finally improved as I wanted the next major thing will be a complete new design which will be more mobile friendly as well. No doubt there will be many other little things to do as well!
Let me know if you have any issues with the new notification system because even though it's a lot better now it'll be a bit of a shock to some old users :o

Nov 26, 2012 - Emo Site Update [read more]
Ok so here we go another site update...
Some of the recent changes/improvements include:
  • Finally all areas on the site should now state your local time rather than just the server time as before. The only exception is on the chat - this still needs to be done. Read more here: www.soemo.co.uk/forums/topic.php?id=2807045
  • When new pics are added to your site model page automatic email notifications are now sent out.
  • Users are prompted to set a default/cover/profile picture if they have at least one picture.
  • Private messages and users forum posts have been updated to use JQuery paging to be more efficient and user friendly. Basically it makes the pages load faster as the whole page doesn't need to reload. Alternatives are available for users with JavaScript disabled. Read more here: www.soemo.co.uk/forums/topic.php?id=2806928
  • Changed user online icon throughout site.
  • Added extra options to orientation (Asexual, Pansexual, Polysexual) and status (Broken Hearted, It's Complicated, Forever Alone) in edit profile. Read more here: www.soemo.co.uk/forums/topic.php?id=2806977

Once the entire notification system has been improved then next major changes will include a new design which will be more mobile friendly as well.

Firstly it's a shame the emo meet in August didn't go ahead, but we'll try and plan another soon (possibly in the winter)

www.soEmo.co.uk is certainly still progressing well judging by the latest statistics, which is great to see as some reckon the emo scene is in decline.
Simply go an 'emo' gig and you'll see this scene is far from dead.

Loads of things are on the To Do list as ever but a couple of recent things done include:
  • Added unfriend option directly on profile pages rather than just in your list of friends
  • Lots of new chat mods to cope with the growing numbers in the chat rooms
I have personally met a few new people through this site recently, which is always fun. You know who you are you lovely people :D Plus it makes all the effort worthwhile when I hear of other meets and relationships via www.soEmo.co.uk.

This year is flying by... it's scary!

Anyway the site is still going strong despite a few silly haters that have been about recently. Don't worry they are warned/removed as soon as they are spotted or reported.

The friends new journal entry notification system will be improved as some members do not like having all those notifications.

I am also looking at a sorting a new design for the site when I have the spare time because it's starting to look a tiny bit dated. This new design will also be more mobile friendly. Any suggestions are welcome just email info@soemo.co.uk

Please check out the following topic about me and the site - just a little rant xD

Finally the emo meet in August is planned to go ahead on 18th August. I will be sending PM's out to see exactly who is coming. If there is sufficient interest it'll happen else it might not.. I'd hate to let people down though :)

Oh and not forgetting the latest site statistics:

Jun 02, 2012 - Emo Site Update [read more]
June already jeeze :D A quick little update anyway... Not a great deal of work has been done recently. I have been so busy with work, but a few things to point out:
  • Notifications added when someone replies to your journal comments
  • Fixed issue with age verification stopping a few of the youngest users registering
  • Facebook over 1k likes now :) The Like button might be page specific soon rather than just a general site Like button
  • General big tidy up of the database (removing spammy comments and users, etc)
  • Journals are certainly taking off with over 2000 entries now

The To Do list will be attacked again when I get more spare time :)

Oh and don't forget to check out the emo meet forum topic to express your interest, give suggestions, etc: www.soemo.co.uk/forums/topic.php?id=2805821. It is still planned to go ahead on the 18th or 25th of August.

OMG a month has already passed since the last news update! Anyway a few of the things that have been going on in the last month:
  • Notifications when one of your friends update their journal (this has certainly made the journals more popular!)
  • Disabled email and account notifications when comment on your own journal or pictures!
  • Improved site models section to make it easier to change the default/cover picture
  • Sorted an issue with setting your default/profile pictures when uploading multiple images
  • Facebook Ads created and set to run over the School Easter Holidays (proving quite worthwhile so will use again)

Now onto the next things to do:
  • Sort out uploading images from certain Apple devices (iPhone, iPod)
  • Improve 'friends' system
  • Notifications when someone replies to your journal comments (already in place on other areas of the site - pic comments, etc)
  • More Facebook and Google paid advertising

Finally please check out the emo meet forum topic to express your interest, give suggestions, etc: www.soemo.co.uk/forums/topic.php?id=2805821

Another brief update.. Firstly it's great to see the new journal facility being used quite a lot already :) Further improvements will be made soon including notifications when one of your friends update their journal.

Secondly please check out Soho's for a fantistic range of alternative clothing - we were approached to join their affiliate scheme.

As you may already know soEmo.co.uk advertises using Google AdWords, but we are looking into Facebook Advertising as well soon. This should be a great and cost-effective way to further promote the site.

Finally I haven't forgotten about organising another emo meet. A forum topic to gather interest and ideas will be posted very soon!

Feb 05, 2012 - 2012 Update - Journals, Next Emo Meet & More! [read more]
2012 has gotten off to a good start with member numbers still steadily increasing. The main change recently are the introduction of user journals. The visibility can be set on all your journal entries (public, friends only, private) and if a member has access they can add comments.
The forums as a number of you have noticed are also running faster than ever after some tinkering around with the coding.

2012 is set to be an exciting year for www.soEmo.co.uk. Some of the things to look forward to include:
  • Dedicated mobile version of the site
  • Extended privacy options on your profiles
  • Complete new site design
  • Competitions
  • soEmo.co.uk Merch
  • Another Emo Meet (a forum topic gathering interest for this will be posted in the next few weeks)

Anyway as ever here are the latest stats for soEmo.co.uk:
