First, I have bipolar disorder. I've been on meds for it since I was 14 (i'm 17 now), and my dad keeps bitching at me to get off them. Everyone (besides my dad) tells me though that I won't be able to function without meds. Sadly, but I kind of agree. I can't even go a day without my meds- all hell breaks loose. The thing is though, I might not be able to get my meds once I graduate this year because I might not have health insurance. Second, I have a vision disability that I was born with. I'm considered legally blind. And I might get put on social security or disability, because I can't drive, and it's hard for me to find work that I can actually do without anyone's help. And my parents say that I'm just using social security as an excuse and that I don't really need that. Yet my mom's been the one who was in the doctor's office with me, listening to the doctor telling me about options, and saying that social security and/or disability would really help me out. So I think I'm going to wait until I turn 18 in February so I can get social security or disability (i'm not sure which one would help me the most) on my own. My parents won't help me get it.

Hey Aisha! Some people do come off meds for bi polar but not many and those that do have to do it really gradually pref with help and support. The disability thing is hard to weigh up and I guess is different in the states.I dont know how to say this but I believe the most important thing is not to allow yourself to be defined by your diagnosis or if you were on disability benefits allowing that to define you. You need to look for that real you, the you at the centre of everything and spend time being that person, even if that person is Bi polar or on disability it dont matter, you are youre own shining star. Hope that sounds right
