They are so caught up in their happiness that they don't realize I'm not really a part of it. I am wandering along the periphery. I am like the people in the paintings, sharing the same room with them but not really there. I am like the fish in the aquarium, thinking in a different language, adapting to a life that's not my natural habitat. I am the people in the other cars, each with his or her own story, but passing too quickly to be noticed or understood. . . .There are moments I just sit in my frame, float in my tank, or ride in my car and say nothing, think nothing that connects me to anything at all. I need to bridge my sense of loneliness and disconnection with a sense of community and continuity even if I must manufacture it from time on the Web and my use of calling cards to connect long distance. I must “log on” somewhere, and if it is only in cyberspace, that is still far better than nowhere at all. We are like puzzle pieces who are perfectly suited to make a giant picture together, but we are assembling ourselves in the dark. In the end, I can understand myself,only. I am the only one to which I never have to explain what I mean. Everything else is misunderstanding. I disconnect myself from people who cannot add five to my ten words, because, sooner or later, I won't be able to say even a word. <i>
