Don't concern yourself with such things, do whatever the hell you want.
You will find like minded people. I mean, isn't everyone doing that?
(With in reason, I mean, don't go murdering people)
if you say you're emo, you're emo imo
i'd say if you're into the music (or the culture in some way), you shouldn't have to look a certain way. i think that is perhaps the most negative thing about the subculture because it shoved a lot of people that didn't fit the mold (people that weren't stick thin, people of color, older people) out which feels... counterintuitive to what emo is suppose to be about.
i've never been able to straighten my hair. it won't physically do it and the whole process while something i dreamed about when i was a teen was too high maintenance for my depressed ass. it also is hard to keep healthy, but especially didn't work for my hair type. plenty of people recognized me as "the emo kid" even before i ever associated myself with the label from my attitude and i wore a lot of black pft. i now dress in all kinds of styles!
emo has evolved a lot since the 80s and it will continue to. don't feel like you have to fit any kind of stereotype to be part of the community. if later on in life when you have more control over what you wear and do with your hair, try it if you want! but if it's not something you're interested in, don't stress about it. it's better to look like "you" than a subculture you like.
You don't need to let labels define you.
Emo itself is a label generated by society to categories...same as chav, goth, punk etc.
At the end of the day we're all just individuals being ourselves
