What does emo mean to you? Mar 04 2009, 10:20 AM

Every individual has his or her own idea of what emo means, so I thought it would be intresting to find out how many different ways our community here thiinks of emo.

I'll start then..... Emo to me is a subculture of great music and clothes, it describes alot of materieal things but it is also something extrodinary, every emo I know sees the world through a different light to tthe rest of the world, each person can put an individual touch to anything but emos tend to express themselves more weather it be through drawing, poetry, music, dance or some other way we always get our points accross even when we do not know it.

Emo to me is a personality, a mixture of strong feelings, looks and prefrences as well as a way of loveing someone and expressing that love. If you are "realy emo" there is one thing you will know in your heart but I'll leave you to guess that on your own.

emo to me, is a state of mind. what people think, how they dress, and the music they listen to. how you express your feelings, of or toward something. and also, i guess the hair? depression is also a big part of it. but emo's can be happy.

Emo to me is emotive hardcore pioneered by bands like Embrace and Fugazi.. That's what it will always be, to me, as I think the term "emo" today is little more than a label.. I would prefer it held on to it's original meaning because it carries some relevance there and has some use other than to pigeonhole people who look or act a certain way..

I think the idea of acting, dressing, feeling and being a certain way to fit into a category is really dumb.. The only thing I want to be in life is me.. that's all.. I am fine with that so if someone needs to categorise me then call me "memo" :)

Emo will always mean music wether it be emo or screamo it will always be important to the emo image. As it has been put before (somewhere) music is life, without music life would be so dull and boring.

Exactly.. If emo has multiple interpretations for different people then emo is nothing more than a label for somebody who wants to be an individual..

Emo to me is a music genre forgotten about by most people. It has evolved dramatically, almost stupidly from it's roots. However I'm not hear to bitch otherwise I certainly wouldn't have developed this great community site. The modern day meaning of what 'emo' is all about it here to stay for now. Give it a few years and that will be forgotten about by a lot of people I bet.

I do not think 'emo' will ever carry the same weight as the goth or punk subcultures. What do you think?

I think emo is the "flavor of the month" so to speak, it may become more popular but I think a few enthusiasts are here to stay, emo may become a regular culture sooner or later as it is so popular a sub culture now.

I really don't think it will carry the weight of goth or punk.. I think it has surpassed stuff like new romantics but I think it will evolve into something more.. I think the direction it is moving in is the sort of 80's gothic look that was closer to punk.. That's not a bad thing though as that was an awesome look..

 for me, it's just a music...
 i don't go with emo fashion because for me it's just a music that expresses a deep emotion...
 i can't connect the fashion with the music...
 here in my country,these freakin' people pride themselves  as emo though they don't know anything about
 the music...
 they cut theirselves with blade for no reasons...

Thats such a stereotypical view, the music is probably one of if not thee most important aspect of being emo, cuttings not really got anything to do with it, maybe depression with some link but not directly =/

Emo is who I am. It's who people are, something that's always there and now it has a name- Emo!. It's a way of life -music taste, fashion sense, hair styles-
I think it's just a part of you.

For me, EMO is a lifestyle, it's about the music and feelings s:
I meen, I feel in a certent way when I listen to EMO or "EMO-like" music.
Sometimes in a happy and sometimes in a sad way, but almost everytime I feel something.
It's the main think EMO is to me, I think I haven't really thought it through enough to say more

So many people say that emo kids are the overly sad ones who think about killing themselves constantly. o.0

Lets see...So this must mean that me and friends are depressed and suicidal. Yeah, that's totally not me, yet the retards at school will be like, go away and kill yourself you emo kid. I've got my whole life a head of me, why would I do that? Ask anyone who knows me, I've got this happy and playful personality.

Emo is supposed to be a music genre, thats it, nothing more. But you know, it "evolved". If it has "evolved" its nothing more than a dressing style. Cause really, anyone and everyone feels sad and get depressed from time to time. This however, does not, or should nat, make someone emo.

Emo is the what you really are and who you really are.....
Emo is a word that really means heart.
Emo is a word that commonly retrieve your emotions as on your everyday life..
Emo reassures our principle for we are more confident because of our own beliefs....
Emo can not see on what you wear and how rich are you...Being an emo makes as all in the same levels...
No poor nor rich.....
but still you will decide of what to do for your own emo style......

you and yourself can just define of what ind of emo are you and where to place being an emo....

well good luck with it hun Emo will always be to me what is in the heart and not just looks and music (although I couldn't live without the music xP) Emo is a state of mind close to tranquility, no matter how hard things get emos pull through together (that sounds cheesy) but emo is the only type of people (sorry to say type ]= ) who seem to pull together like a family, look through the help forum and you cana see that we care for one another. Emo is a spirit within us, it's something we can not change and can not ignore, I am proud to be emo x
