My name is Susanna Nordstrom and I am a sociologists. I am currently writing an article on subculture and identity in the 21st century and I was wondering if those of you here who in one way or another confess to an emo subculture would help me explain YOUR relation to it? I myself am a metalhead and wrote my doctoral thesis on heavy metal so naturally I have an outside perspective in this case. I would be ever so grateful to you if you would take a few minutes to answer one, a few or all the questions below. I have numbered them in case you feel like giving me information on particular questions. If you would be willing, please enclose your answer as a comment or mail me. Thank you kindly, appreciate any help I can get! If you have any questions, feel free to ask! 1.When did you get into emocore? 2.What would you say characterizes the subculture? How long has it been around? 3.What has the emo subculture done for your identity? Have you experienced any changes in your identity during your time in it? 4.Has the emo subculture changed in any way during the time you have been a member? If so, in what way/s? 5.“Who” would you be if you weren´t in the emo subculture? 6.Is the emo subculture described in any particular way in media? How? 7.During the last 15 years, the world has seen an increase in information channels and information spread (for example through social media and 24/7 news reports). Through this information, the individual is bombarded with information on how to “be” and act to be a perfect human being. How would you say that this could affect the identity of the individual? 8. Are you, as an emo fan, in any way affected by the development described above? Why?/Why not? 9. To what extent would you say that the emo subculture is a “vaccine” against the demands expressed by media and society?
